Blog: ASEAN Is The First To Dump Trump
Almost $1 billion has flowed out of Asia since Trump won the US presidential election.
Possible culprit for the massive outflows could be a bearish view of Asia as it is generally seen that TPP will not pass. This is the most likely explanation given that many emerging economies – especially Vietnam – were reliant on the TPP for their growth.
Another reason for the outflow could be Trump’s tough protectionist trade talk, creating concerns that Asian exporters will be hurt. A general drop in consumer confidence will not be pleasant for rising companies like VietJet. Also, there has been downward pressure on Asian currencies since the election. Trump has not been good for Asia thus far, it seems.
