Daniel J. Kritenbrink has been nominated as the next Ambassador to Vietnam. Mr. Kritenbrink currently works as National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the U.S. State Department.

Since joining the State Department Foreign Service in 1994, Mr. Kritenbrink has served overseas in Tokyo (1994-95), Sapporo (1995-97), Kuwait (1997-99), Tokyo (2000-04), and Beijing (2005-2009). He also served as Staff Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs in Washington, DC (1999-2000).

“Kritenbrink has deep experience in east Asian affairs including service for the past two years as the senior officer for Asia and Pacific on the National Security Council,” David Brown, a retired veteran U.S. diplomat, said.

“His intimate knowledge of the foreign policy process and close relationships with other senior Asia hands will be a key to Kritenbrink’s effectiveness in Hanoi,” said Brown.

Kritenbrink will need confirmation from the U.S. Senate before being posted in Vietnam.

The current U.S. ambassador to Vietnam, Ted Osius, was nominated by Barack Obama in 2014. Osius is expected to conclude his term by the end of this year.

Mr. Kritenbrink is a native of Nebraska and holds a B.A. from the University of Nebraska and an M.A. from the University of Virginia. He and his wife Nami have two children.
