Vietnam Wins First Ever Olympic Gold Medal

Hoang Xuan Vinh of Vietnam won the Gold medal today in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  See the video skip to 2:30 to see the amazing final moment when Vinh sealed his victory.

This is the first Gold medal Vietnam has won in Olympic history.

41-year old Hoang, an expert marksman, edged out hometown favorite, 29-year old Brazilian Felipe Wu who won silver.  Wu had some consolation knowing he scored the first medal of the 2016 Games for host country Brazil. Pang Wei of China scored 180.4 to win the bronze.

Nine other events are upcoming for the Vietnamese delegation. High expectations are now on for the rest of the team, especially weightlifters Thach Kim Tuan and Vuong Thi Huyen.

  • Hoang Xuan Vinh (born in 1974), competition category: men’s 10m air pistol, 50m pistol
  • Tran Quoc Cuong (born in 1974), competition category: men’s 10m air pistol, 50m pistol

  • Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (born in 1996), competition category: women’s 200m and 400m freestyle, 200m and 400m medley
  • Hoang Quy Phuoc (born in 1994), competition category: men’s 100m and 200m freestyle
  1. Track& Field Athletics
  • Nguyen Thi Huyen (born in 1993), competition category: women’s 400m and 400m hurdles
  • Nguyen Thanh Ngung (born in 1992), competition category: men’s 20km race walking

  • Vu Thanh An (born in 1992), competition category: men’s individual sabre
  • Nguyen Thi Le Dung (born in 1985), competition category: women’s individual sabre
